I’ve worked on a lot of #3dprinted lighting projects over the years, but this one with @adam_yarinsky remains one of my favorites, because of the way we dug into the #details . The goal was to integrate the new shade with a beautiful, minimal stainless steel fixture already in place. The solution takes advantage of custom tapered connection pieces more easily fabricated with 3d printing than traditional techniques.

I like constraints. So #3dprinting has always been a tricky area of investigation for me, because the ruling ethos is that a #3dprinter can “make anything”. While that’s certainly more true than, say, working with a bandsaw, experience has shown there are forms that are more suited to a layer-by-layer, bottom-up way of making. In 2016, I had a very strange idea to try to project fragments of letterforms onto a bridge in Weimar, Germany. Over a decade before that, I had the opportunity to spend a semester studying architecture at the Bauhaus-Universität and while immersing myself in the revolutionary modern design thinking that came out of that place, I got to indulge my love of German letters, both in the figurative sense (Deutsche Klassik, Goethe, Schiller..) and the literal sense. I lived in an old house that said “Gut Werkzeug halbe Arbeit” in strong Fraktur characters right there on the facade. And through the @pavillonpresse I learned about the work of Felix Walbaum in Weimar. He’s a super interesting figure whose work bridges so many traditions of visual culture and at some point I thought it would be great to bring some of Weimar’s graphic history together with its unique built environment to light up the Ilm.

In general, it’s about setting up some simple rules up front and then letting the system play out. Order arises out of apparent chaos. Or out of nothing.

These are a few images from one of the most fun, challenging and overall weirdest periods of my life. For those of you who didn’t follow that journey, here’s a quick recap of how I ended up on the Today Show (I’ll put some links in the bio.) In May 2014, my wife and I had two small kids and I had been too busy with an architecture competition I was working on to think about Mother’s Day. But as it happened I had the day before free and the office where I was working had just gotten a new 3d printer. So I snapped some shots and headed in to make a vase. About a half year later, some friends convinced me to take the parametric design tool I’d created and put it to work for other people selling vases on Kickstarter. 3d printers are fun and I thought this could be a way to get my own. So after convincing my extremely patient wife to help me put together a cringy Kickstarter launch video (link in bio), Fahz was born. (“Fahz -It’s your face in a vase!” Get it???) …

I love it when I’m surprised by these generative studies. This one starts as a simple exploration of lines and connections, but once you add line thickness as a variable, by about :04 the whole thing starts to look like a Keith Haring composition. Then the line thickness gets really fat and it becomes something else. So somewhere there exists an optimal arrangement of line thickness and spacing to achieve heightened Haringness. While not the most sophisticated or most beautiful, this exploration is important to me because it lit a spark. The end of grad school for me was full of lectures on how “algorithms” would transform design. Seemed plausible, but without having ever written a line of code, it was all pretty abstract. Then I decided to see if I could make a kinky line straight. I agonized over these fifty-odd lines of VBScript (zero stars, would not recommend), but as I started to figure out how to draw geometry to the screen, a funny thing happened. Those squiggles started to straighten out.

One day I made an awful lot of geometry. I’m always interested in creating systems to make objects. In this case the forms themselves were constrained by a desire to have them quickly 3d-printed. I translated 2d physics simulations between rigid bodies with the z-axis representing the time component of the interactions. That methodology actually corresponds very well to additive manufacturing processes which mostly require one layer to be printed over the previous layer in a sequential manner. I printed a few hundred of these things at one point and they still show up in random drawers when I’m looking for a screwdriver.

One day I made an awful lot of geometry. I’m always interested in creating systems to make objects. In this case the forms themselves were constrained by a desire to have them quickly 3d-printed. I translated 2d physics simulations between rigid bodies with the z-axis representing the time component of the interactions. When my son was about seven or eight, he was really into chess. So I decided to design and make him his own set. A system of physical forces was set up to act on a basic cylindrical mesh. By changing the connections and relative strength of the tensile forces within each piece, the overall shape could be manipulated. Because the different shapes are created using the same generative system, there are inherent formal affinities relating pawn to bishop, bishop to knight, knight to rook and so on. The different pieces work together to form a family of taut and distinctly modern sculptural gestures.

Hey everyone! I wanted to let you know I’ve created a new account dedicated to my creative work. From now on @desdesres is where I’ll be cataloguing past digital explorations and design work and, hopefully, post new projects as they develop.

During my time as a “digital potter” I made a lot of vases with a lot of faces. But along the way I’d also get special requests. If I remember correctly, this was an entire extended family. I remember the layout algorithm got quite complex to fit that many faces on one vase without one interfering with the next. I think my record was 16 faces, but I’d have to check.

During my time as a “digital potter” I made a lot of vases with a lot of faces. But along the way I’d also get special requests. If I remember correctly, this was an entire extended family. I remember the layout algorithm got quite complex to fit that many faces on one vase without one interfering with the next. I think my record was 16 faces, but I’d have to check.

The original brief was to create a stair that could stand as a sculpture amid a world-class collection of contemporary art. So it really should be experienced from all sides. In 2016, I had a very strange idea to try to project fragments of letterforms onto a bridge in Weimar, Germany. Over a decade before that, I had the opportunity to spend a semester studying architecture at the Bauhaus-Universität and while immersing myself in the revolutionary modern design thinking that came out of that place, I got to indulge my love of German letters, both in the figurative sense (Deutsche Klassik, Goethe, Schiller..) and the literal sense. I lived in an old house that said “Gut Werkzeug halbe Arbeit” in strong Fraktur characters right there on the facade. And through the @pavillonpresse I learned about the work of Felix Walbaum in Weimar. He’s a super interesting figure whose work bridges so many traditions of visual culture and at some point I thought it would be great to bring some of Weimar’s graphic history together with its unique built environment to light up the Ilm.

In general, it’s about setting up some simple rules up front and then letting the system play out. Order arises out of apparent chaos. Or out of nothing.

While looking through old files for the #betterbin submission I was reminded of an earlier scheme that would have hewed much closer to the original, but with an updated mesh design. Maybe I should have gone with that one.

These are a few images from one of the most fun, challenging and overall weirdest periods of my life. For those of you who didn’t follow that journey, here’s a quick recap of how I ended up on the Today Show (I’ll put some links in the bio.) In May 2014, my wife and I had two small kids and I had been too busy with an architecture competition I was working on to think about Mother’s Day. But as it happened I had the day before free and the office where I was working had just gotten a new 3d printer. So I snapped some shots and headed in to make a vase. About a half year later, some friends convinced me to take the parametric design tool I’d created and put it to work for other people selling vases on Kickstarter. 3d printers are fun and I thought this could be a way to get my own. So after convincing my extremely patient wife to help me put together a cringy Kickstarter launch video (link in bio), Fahz was born. (“Fahz -It’s your face in a vase!” Get it???) …

I love it when I’m surprised by these generative studies. This one starts as a simple exploration of lines and connections, but once you add line thickness as a variable, by about :04 the whole thing starts to look like a Keith Haring composition. Then the line thickness gets really fat and it becomes something else. So somewhere there exists an optimal arrangement of line thickness and spacing to achieve heightened Haringness. We’ll call that the Haring Zone.

Having the opportunity to work with an amazing team of designers, thinkers, fabricators and makers at @calipersudio was an unbelievable experience. Especially for a kid a year out of school, who knew essentially nothing. I tried to be like a sponge, soaking up as much as I could about designing, yes, but also about building, managing and communicating. There is very little I do today that isn’t somehow affected by my time working on this project. Once again, the definitive photos were taken by the masterful @tycole . These are just some shots of the facade at varying levels of completion taken in 2009 by a kid who worked down the street.

While not the most sophisticated or most beautiful, this exploration is important to me because it lit a spark. The end of grad school for me was full of lectures on how “algorithms” would transform design. Seemed plausible, but without having ever written a line of code, it was all pretty abstract. Then I decided to see if I could make a kinky line straight. I agonized over these fifty-odd lines of VBScript (zero stars, would not recommend), but as I started to figure out how to draw geometry to the screen, a funny thing happened. Those squiggles started to straighten out.

One day I made an awful lot of geometry. I’m always interested in creating systems to make objects. In this case the forms themselves were constrained by a desire to have them quickly 3d-printed. I translated 2d physics simulations between rigid bodies with the z-axis representing the time component of the interactions. That methodology actually corresponds very well to additive manufacturing processes which mostly require one layer to be printed over the previous layer in a sequential manner. I printed a few hundred of these things at one point and they still show up in random drawers when I’m looking for a screwdriver.

I’ve been inspired by calligraphic mark-making since I first held a broad nib pen in junior high art class. For me, traditions of ornamental writing from around the world show clearly the generative power of combining simple graphic rules with human intuition and craft. This study combines the controlled chaos of a double pendulum kinetic system with the refined visual logic of an angled pen. Originally, I was interested in the marks themselves, but over time I started to appreciate the gestural qualities that are hinted at in the changes of speed and direction. Those aspects aren’t fully explored here, but I’m starting to think it’s something I should be looking at.

These are some screen shots of a guitar stand I designed, but never really got around to fabricating. I think I like the fluted version better (slides 3 and 4). Maybe the fluting needs to be emphasized a bit more. And then it needs to be printed.

The setup of this study is pretty simple. A bunch of circles in a frame. And the result is to be expected. A highly structured arrangement of bodies. But there are two or three seconds there in the beginning where things go wild. There are territorial battles and border skirmishes. The structure that will eventually take hold is not yet clear. When my son was about seven or eight, he was really into chess. So I decided to design and make him his own set. A system of physical forces was set up to act on a basic cylindrical mesh. By changing the connections and relative strength of the tensile forces within each piece, the overall shape could be manipulated. Because the different shapes are created using the same generative system, there are inherent formal affinities relating pawn to bishop, bishop to knight, knight to rook and so on. The different pieces work together to form a family of taut and distinctly modern sculptural gestures.

This one in particular is special, because it is the only one of thousands of such studies to take physical form as a giclée print. Hey everyone! I wanted to let you know I’ve created a new account dedicated to my creative work. From now on @desdesres is where I’ll be cataloguing past digital explorations and design work and, hopefully, post new projects as they develop.
For those of you who have been following my personal account, don`t worry, I`ll still post to of my family and personal stuff on @desbiens . (Spring is my favorite time of year in Brooklyn and I’m looking to replace the camera I had stolen in Paris last summer.) But for a while now I’ve wanted to create a space specifically for my own art and design where I can reflect on past work and hopefully inspire some new ideas.
It`s been a challenging few years for me both personally and professionally, and my creative output has slowed down significantly as a result. But I`m looking forward to using this new account to push myself to create more and share something every day. In the beginning, it will be mostly reflections on things that were made in the past with sometimes very little reflection at all. In time, I want to make new things. And collaborate with new people.
